The History of Hood

The history of the hood and hooded sweater or hoodie started in the medieval times of the bliss and the power of the church in the form of monk’s hooded cloak. Then it, too, meant an isolation and seclusion, but in a much more quiet sense than the criticism and rebellion of Robin Hood. Later hooded clothes were used in the wardrobe of European kings and queens, such as Tudor, until evolved to present-day hats. Later, hoods were used by secret organization to cover faces such as famous Ku Klux Klan. Today, hood is still used for secret purposes by some people – criminals may use hoods to cover their faces during robbery, for example. But majority of people admire hooded sweater for its warmth, comfort, and easy fit. Finally, a simple hood gave a history to such famous head pieces such as balaclava, burqini, French hood, Gable hood, headscarf, and hijab.
Because of the negative aura surrounding the hooded sweaters, several public places showed criticism towards wearing of the hoodies by their visitors. For example, on September 2007 a four-year-old girl was asked to take off her hoodie when visiting Les Harker's Amusements in Rhyl, UK, due to a security policy. The amusement park representative explained that the venue can only protect its visitors when it can see and recognize their faces. In addition, in May 2005, the managers of the Bluewater shopping center in Kent, UK, issued a dress code for the whole mall, stating that nobody could enter it when wearing hoodies and baseball caps.
